Blue represents peace and tranquility; white for purity and righteousness; and red for the bloody struggle by the region's people for their right to self-identity and self-determination. The yellow star on the left side of the blue band symbolizes the sovereignty of the Philippines over the autonomous region. The green circle enclosing a crescent and small five stars, all yellow in color, represents the cultures of the autonomous region's inhabitants and the abundance of vegetation in the region. The small stars represents the five provinces under the region's jurisdiction namely; Basilan, Lanao del Sur, Maguindanao, Sulu and Tawi-Tawi. The crescent, which is on an acute angle facing the big star and engulfing the other smaller stars, represents the dominant Muslim population of the autonomous region.
